Become Bi-Lingual – Learn the Industry Languages Having participated in a number of student events recently where I shared a number of secrets I have as a direct result found myself inspired to put together a Business Boot Camp Series of Secrets/Tips for students. After all, our students today are the talent that will take our industry forward. My advice is that each student needs to differentiate himself/herself from the competition (which includes friends/classmates/non –student employees). Recently I was invited to present to 200 students at Guildford University and to be a table host at a speed networking event for 70 students at The London Event School. The point of both events was to provide guidance for students on how they could make the most of career opportunities in the events industry. At these events I shared a number of secrets but as a direct result I have found myself inspired to put together a Business Boot Camp Series of Secrets/Tips for students. After all, our students today are the talent that will take our industry forward.

My advice was that each students needs to differentiate himself/herself from the competition (which includes friends/classmates/non –student employees). Let’s share our first tip – Business Cards.

Currently the economic climate means that there are less job and work placement opportunities than previously so what do you do if you want to make a start/progress your events career? The answer is simple. Become a volunteer. 

Having been a volunteer now for a number of years I definitely recognize the importance that volunteer work has made on my personal and business development. You can gain experience in new areas of interest, make all sorts of connections and generally raise your own profile. All of this volunteer activity can be included in your CV/resume and is generally one of the factors that will differentiate you from other candidates.
