It was just a year ago that the NY area was battered by Irene and a surprise snowstorm in October. Here we are again with inclement weather bearing down on our area. Predictions have Hurricane Sandy scheduled to slam our area today and tomorrow and widespread power outages are expected. However, electricity or not, the show must go on. My business must grow and I need to make sure I’m making the most of my time. So – here are a few projects that I plan to focus on while we are “unplugged”.
PROJECT PLANNING
Most of the time, I plan out our projects in excel and lay out the big goals for the coming months/year along with smaller goals that we can track over time. This is something that can absolutely be done without an internet connection. Another benefit of being without electricity is that everything seems quieter – the perfect environment for a good business brainstorming session.
WRITING
Whether with pen and paper by candlelight, or on my laptop/iPad, I use this opportunity to blog. Writing seems to flow when I have down time and I don’t want to miss a single good idea. I write a few blogs and post them once I’m back online.
RELATIONSHIP BUILDING
There is always a long list of people that I want to reach out to – just to see how they’re doing. However, taking the time to actually follow up on this is sometimes hard in the busy-ness of life. With Outlook offline, I take the time to write a more personal message to friends and colleagues that can be sent when the power comes back on. It’s a great way to make the time to reach out to people that I care about and actually write enough to share valuable info.
How are you handling the bad weather? Or, if you aren’t in the area, what do you do in down time?
