#Eventprofs: Ask Me Anything.. No, Really.

A few weeks ago, President Obama made history when he hosted an Ask Me Anything session online. It was a chance for the general public to write in and ask any questions they wanted. It was a great move, in my opinion, because it was a simple way to have his community (the United States of America) weigh in. And so, as one who always likes to test new ideas, I thought I would test this AMA concept on the blog. Here’s your chance – ask me anything. Really — ask me about events, social media, technology, my workout this morning. If I don’t know the answer, I’ll look it up, or I’ll ask your fellow readers to weigh in. I’d like to see how this works, so please take advantage and let’s test this concept out!

Ask Me Anything, eh? I’m in.
Liz, since you’re a courageous and perpetual innovator, what’s the one new thing (strategy, tactic, mindset, etc) you’ve tried this year that’s delivered best value for your events?

What a great question! I love this one (and thanks for being the first to participate!). I think the one thing we’ve done this year that has been interesting is focused invitation-only events. We spend so much time marketing to the masses trying to get crowds to come out and I’ve learned that we can get the crowds through intent research and direct invitations. People feel a deeper connection to the events and it creates the beginning of a great community. And, in the end, the work load may be more for this approach, but the rewards are much higher.

Glad to hear it. In all seriousness, what is the biggest mistake you’ve made as an event planner that others should avoid?

        • http://www.lizkingevents.com Liz King

Ohh.. that’s a good one. I would say the biggest mistake I have made is underestimating my value.. which sounds really cocky, but it really isn’t. When planners are starting up, they get into this mode where they feel like they have to give everything away for free. And then when it comes to charging, they always undercharge. A friend told me just yesterday that we have to remember that “All men were created equal”. We all deserve to be paid for our time, skills and expertise. I think LKE is in a great place, but I think we could be doing better had I learned to pitch new clients and charge well long ago.
