I love when people come to me and ask me questions about how to integrate social media into their events to achieve a particular purpose. Whether it be branding the event or connecting attendees, I love to brainstorm ideas and find a way to reach goals. What I’m not a fan of is people who come to “brag” about how they are doing this new thing with social media at their events.
“Hey. Guess what. We’re totally “updating” our event this year. We’re going to have a Twitter Feed and a Foursquare check in. Isn’t that so cool?”
“Why?” I reply.
“Well, it’s just that we’re trying to do something fresh and new and we really like the way you have these at your events. I think it helps a lot.”
“Helps to do what?”
“I don’t know”.
And that’s where my trouble begins. Social media is not décor. It’s not just another thing to add to the long list of things that make your events look cool. It’s not a trendy fabric structure or the latest uplights on the market. Social media is a TOOL. It’s a tool to help you achieve certain goals. There are countless ways that social media can strategically be integrated into an event to make it better, but just having it for the sake of having it isn’t worth very much. Tomorrow, I’m going to write a post on some of the goals that you can achieve using social media and I hope you’ll tune in to read. Even more so, I hope you’ll think of this article the next time someone comes running over to tell you about the “cool” things they’re doing with social media, even though they can’t explain why!
