Over the weekend, I played the role of a Social Media Doctor during Social Media Weekend. The concept was simple – make an appointment to talk with a social media doctor who will diagnose what’s going on with your sm presence and get a “prescription” for how to tweak (or create) a strategy. It was a fun concept and I definitely plan to use it for future events! I thought it would be nice to share some of the most frequently asked questions since I’m sure many of you are wondering as well. If you have more you’d like to know, just add a comment below and I’ll answer in a future post!
How do I figure out who to follow on Twitter?
There are many ways to narrow the wide world of Twitter to find people who tweet content that is interesting and relevant. One way is to check out wefollow.com and search by various keywords. This will provide you a list of the most influential tweeters on that topic as well as those with the most followers. Check out the listing for #eventprofs or eventplanner. Another option is to look at the profile of someone that you admire and check out who they follow. You may also want to see some of the lists that they are on and follow the people who are listed alongside your role model.
What is the value of LinkedIn Recommendations?
There is some debate about the value of recommendations since most (if not all) recommendations are glowing. How much can you really learn from someone who is so in favor of a particular person? I would argue that most of the value when it comes to recommendations is who has written one for you – not necessarily what they have said. If the CEO or your manager has written it, it shows more than your best friend. I would also say that you should limit your recommendations to 1-2 per job for your most recent 1-2 jobs.
What is a Twitter List?
Simply put, a Twitter list is a way of grouping your followers into categories. The nice thing about this is that you can save that group and see their feed – a great way to sort through the overwhelming home timeline. You can create many lists of less than 500 people under any topic name. One way to see if your branding is effective is to check out how people have listed you. If the categories are all over the place, your tweets probably are as well.
