Planning is a critical component to success, as is action. However, it is equally important to allow space for flexibility. No one can plan out every moment of their life. Stuff gets in the way and if you don’t make room for all the horrible and wonderful things that will float into your life unplanned, you’re setting yourself up for failure. While it makes sense to set goals and lay out project plans, a key to success is knowing when to pull the plug on an idea and when to shift your efforts to a random opportunity that comes up.
Too much flexibility is also a bad thing – it can prevent you from staying focused and setting clear and attainable goals. Many an entrepreneur falls prey to the overly flexible lifestyle – shifting directions so often that no one can keep up or figure out what you do.
How do you ensure you have a good balance of planning and flexibility? When was the last time you allowed for a crazy idea to take your business to a level you never imagined? When did you last let too many crazy ideas take you away from the core focus of your business? How did you overcome?
