30 Days of Branding – Day Twenty Four: Organize the Noise

If you've spent any length of time on Twitter, you'll notice that not everyone uses it for professional reasons. It can be really stressful to wade through thousands of updates about what people are doing and eating to find meaningful content. But, hopefully by now you've been able to find that there is a lot of great content on Twitter if you can find it. I hope that you've been able to make some meaningful relationships by honing in on the right group of people through tweet chats and through people that you follow.

In October 2009, Twitter released new functionality to help you organize all of the interesting people that you follow. With Twitter Lists, you can group the people you follow into categories. You can click on a list you've created to view only the updates from those people. These lists are public so they allow your followers to see what you have created and follow your list for changes.

With lists, you can group people that have similar interests. If you are event planner who does social media, you can make two lists to capture these populations so that you can sort through the updates to get relevant information. For those of you who are new to Twitter, you can look at the lists of someone you respect. If they are a teacher who loves music, you may want to look at their music picks to determine whether they are someone you'd like to follow.

When lists first came out, I thought it would be the perfect way of putting all event professionals into one list so that newcomers could easily find the community so I went to work creating my "Awesome Eventprofs" list. It didn't take long before I found that there is a limit of 500 to each and that it didn't make the most sense to organize people that way. Lessons learned by trial and error are always the lessons that stick with you. Over time, I've been moving that one main list into several - tradeshows, weddings, meetings, New York etc. This way, I can easily sort the people that I follow.

Between saved searches and lists, I almost never look at my home feed these days. That helps me hone directly into the content that is most interesting to me. With these lists and my other tips and tricks, I hope you'll be able to make good use of Twitter for your branding needs! Of course, please feel free to leave any additions in the comments!
